Historic Downtown Athens Engagement
Lauren & David
Let’s dive right into Lauren and David’s historic downtown Athens engagement session. I’ve personally found this location, just around the corner from the University of Georgia, to be absolutely picturesque. The Southern charm permeates every angle and sightline. The historic architecture and the greenery compliment each other in the most vibrant of ways! We decided to focus on historic buildings including several local churches and the United States Postal Office.
One particular location that I will definitely bring more couples back to is the archway across the front of the First Methodist Church. The angles, the trees, the natural lighting? It all came together just perfect for the pictures to glow. In fact, all of this historic downtown Athens area just has magnificent natural lighting creating a perfect atmosphere.
The outfits were chosen to emphasize being timeless and classic. Warm, neutral tones will never go out of style! I absolutely adore Lauren’s brown linen dress and the drape lines across her body. David did exactly what he needed to with his outfit choice to make her dress shine (wedding day prep!).
Let’s Be Candid For A Second
The couple specifically requested me to capture candid moments while we progressed through the locations of our session. Capturing candid moments is like bottling up the real stuff of life into little time capsules of genuine emotions and interactions. Usually, candids make up a lot of my pre-wedding and reception photos. Unlike posed, picture-perfect shots, candid photos are the “real deal” – they show us people’s quirks, real smiles, and those split-second connections that words sometimes fail to describe.
Don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely a time and place for portrait and posed photography. I’ve made my life’s work revolve around it! But sometimes, when you look at candid shots later on, you can practically hear the laughter, see the surprise, and feel the warmth of the moment. In a world where we often put our best face forward, candid shots keep things refreshingly authentic. They remind us that life isn’t always polished and that’s okay. It’s these imperfect, unfiltered snippets that make our memories truly special. Especially when you’ve got a trained eye behind the camera. 😉
Be Willing To Pivot
We were supposed to meet in downtown Atlanta originally for this session. Due to a major event in the city, we pivoted to Athens, and I’m so glad we did. It turned out to be in the Top 5 most gorgeous engagements I have ever captured!
One thing that was unique about this session is that it took place just ten days before their wedding. Taking some time, that close to the chaos, to just spend time and focus in on each other as their journey begins? I love it! There wedding is going to take place in Marietta at Kimball Hall. I’ll be sharing those photos a little down the line, so go ahead and check out this engagement session below!
